ORDER OF WORSHIP for RESURRECTION SUNDAY

OPENING PSALM (Psalm 16)

1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.

2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.”

3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.

4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips.

5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot.

6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.

8 I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure.

10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.

11 You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

SONG OF ADORATION (CHRIST THE LORD IS RISEN TODAY)

PRAYER OF ADORATION

At this point you can pause to offer your own prayer of adoration and praise to God. To help prompt you to pray a prayer of praise ask yourself one of the following questions:

  • What Scriptural passage about who God is can I turn into a prayer of praise? (e.g. Philippians 2:5-11)

  • What character or attribute of God can I focus on and give Him praise for? (e.g. His Sovereignty, Goodness, Justice, Faithfulness, etc.)

CALL TO CONFESSION (Colossians 3:1-5)

If then you have been raised with Christ,

seek the things that are above,

where Christ is,

seated at the right hand of God.

Set your minds on things that are above,

not on things that are on earth.

For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

When Christ who is your life appears,

then you also will appear with him in glory

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you:

sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire,

and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Reflect on the passage above and ask God 'to search your heart and try your thoughts' and confess the ways that you have fallen short of His glory in thought, word, and deed.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Our Heavenly Father,

You have brought us again to this glad season to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus,

whom You raised from the dead and crowned Lord of all.

We confess that we have been slow to believe,

and we have not joyfully acknowledged His rule over us as we ought.

We have set our minds on things here below

and failed to seek the things that are above, where Christ is seated.

Forgive us, O God, and renew us in the joy of Easter triumph

so that we would continually live as new creations in Christ.

Grant us by your resurrection power to live lives that honor You

and advance the mission of our resurrected King.

Through Christ, our Risen Lord, we pray, Amen.

ASSURANCE OF GRACE IN CHRIST (1 Peter 1:3-5)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!

According to his great mercy,

he has caused us to be born again to a living hope

through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading,

kept in heaven for you,

who by God's power are being guarded

through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

SONG OF THANKSGIVING (HE WILL HOLD ME FAST)

SCRIPTURE READING (Hebrews 2:14-18)

14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

SERMON (Delivered from the Fear of Death)

SONG OF RESPONSE (Before the Throne of God Above)

CONFESSION OF FAITH (Heidelberg Catechism Q. 45)

How does Christ’s resurrection benefit us?

First, by his resurrection he has overcome death, so that he could make us share in the righteousness which he had obtained for us by his death.

Second, by his power we too are raised up to newness of  life.

Third, Christ’s resurrection is a sure pledge of our glorious resurrection.

PRAYER FOR THE CHURCH AND THE WORLD

  • Pray that as Christ has been raised to new life, we would walk in newness of life, honoring our Risen King in all that we do.

    • Think of an area of your life in particular where you need grace to live as a new creation in Christ.

  • Pray that those who are without the hope of Christ’s victory over death would come to know Him who is the Resurrection and the Life.

    • Think of someone that you know personally and pray that they would come to know Christ.

  • Pray that all who are grieving the loss of a loved one would grieve as those who have hope and would look forward to the day when Christ makes all things new.

    • Think of someone in particular in your life (or even you personally) and pray this for them

DEPARTING SONG (Doxology)

PRAYER OF BLESSING

May God be our exceeding joy,

Christ our only hope,

the Spirit our unfailing comforter

in all our worship,

in all our work,

and through all our trials

until Jesus comes again.

Amen.
